Why do I need a VPN Router?
Seemingly every day I read how some big company has been hacked and all of our private information has been breached. This has made me not even want to watch the news. At the same time, I want to make sure my financial information and data is safe and secure. So, how does the average person do that?
You sign up for a VPN service and get a VPN Router powered by Sabai OS for your home. Well, what does that actually mean?
Some people do not know what a VPN is, let alone a VPN Router, so let's start with the basics. A VPN is a “Virtual Private Network”, a method that allows you to encrypt and secure your devices at home or while using public WiFi. Think of it as an added layer of security on each device that is connected to the VPN. Additionally, people use a VPN to obfuscate their location... allowing them to access geo-blocked content or to prevent their ISP from monitoring their use on media players, like Kodi. VPN services are most commonly used in two protocols: PPTP and OpenVPN.
PPTP was developed by Microsoft about 30 years ago and is used all over the world for a simple and fast VPN. Many people who live in countries with internet freedom choose PPTP as it’s easy to set up and is built into most platforms, like Windows. However, PPTP is known to have vulnerabilities and is not a recommended protocol.
OpenVPN was developed by the Linux Open Source community about 15 years ago and is extremely powerful, flexible, and secure. It's an excellent solution, especially in countries like Dubai, China or others where PPTP might be blocked or monitored. Also, OpenVPN offers a more stable connection and is a great VPN solution for those with poor internet service, like on some islands or for satellite internet. Of the two, Sabai Technology only recommends using OpenVPN.
You can purchase a VPN service from a VPN Provider. The VPN Service will give you access to a secured static or shared VPN server. In most cases, VPN Providers have many server locations all around the world. Here is a list of VPN providers that work well with Sabai OS:
While these are the recommended VPN Providers, our VPN Routers will work with almost any VPN provider. There are hundreds of VPN providers available and we would be happy to test yours, if it is not on the list, to see if it is compatible with our VPN Routers. Most VPN providers will have an application that you can download to your computers, tablets, smartphones, and in some cases other devices as well. This application can keep one device secure at a time. Some VPN providers let you have up to 5 concurrent connections at a time. The VPN App works great for public coffee shops, airports, and places where you would connect to a public wireless connection or free WiFi. However, the place where most people forget about keeping all of their web traffic secure is their home. What about your smart tv, security camera and other smart devices in your home? Hackers are now targeting flaws in smart devices like appliances, lighting, and even security systems. Any device that connects to a wireless access point is vulnerable. Most VPN applications cannot run on a device that does not have an app store that allows you to download the VPN application to the device.
Our Sabai OS Router is a VPN Router with a custom operating system that allows you to run an OpenVPN or PPTP connection. The Sabai Router is so easy for the average person to use. In order to use a VPN on most VPN Routers, you are required to download a VPN file from a VPN provider called a .ovpn file. You open this file, take certain bits and pieces of this file and then load that information into different sections of a Graphical user interface(GUI) page. In most cases, and when I first started using VPN, the process was very confusing and I had a very hard time making the VPN connect properly. Sabai OS has an easy 3 step process to do this:
- Download your file from your VPN provider
- Load your VPN provider file or script in the Sabai Router
- Press start
That’s it. Sabai Technology has simplified this process as much as possible, but we also have easy-to-follow directions for our recommended VPN providers. Additionally, all Sabai OS VPN Router purchases come with 1 FREE year of Sabai Freedom Technical Support. Another great feature to Sabai OS is the Gateways page. Some customers do not want all the devices in their house connected to a VPN. So, you can set any device connected to the Sabai Router to local internet or VPN all in the same network. This can be done wirelessly or by ethernet. The Gateways page also has a “kill switch” feature that allows the internet on the router to drop if your PPTP or OpenVPN connection ever goes down.
I have kids old enough to show me new tricks on their iPads and smartphones every day. I always wanted to have a way to ensure they were not up late on the computer when they were supposed to be asleep. They also get grounded from their technology at times but need to keep their phones for emergencies. How could I keep them from using the home network without taking their devices away each time? Well, VPN Routers powered by Sabai OS can allow you to set times that devices cannot access the router. You can also block connection to specific devices. This is the perfect way to keep your children from accessing the web when they are not supposed to. This is a great feature for families as you can keep your kids protected on a VPN Router and still restrict access when, and if, needed.
Sabai VPN Routers will keep you and your family protected and secure. We have VPN Routers that fit every budget and need.
