HMA!

Hide My Ass! is a popular VPN service based in the UK. They have a very large number of fast servers in many countries, use strong encryption, and can unblock the US Netflix catalog.

The company is owned by Czech based Avast Software, but operated from the UK. This means it has to abide by the UK’s extensive data retention laws and is subject to surveillance possibilities.

Plans, pricing, and payment

The options are simple here. There’s a single plan with three different prices depending on how long you sign up for. One month is $11.52, six months is $49.99 ($8.33/ month), twelve months is $78.66 ($6.56/ month).

There’s a 30 day money back guarantee, which is plenty of time to test the service for extended usage times.

Payment can be made via credit card, PayPal, or UnionPay.

Hide My Ass security, logging, and encryption

Hide My Ass has been the subject of attention from the privacy community in the past due to occasions where they were obliged to hand over user data to the police. This suggests that they do indeed keep records of users’ activities.

They do state that their service is not designed to be used to commit illegal activities, and that paying a subscription fee to a VPN provider does not entitle the user to break the law.

That being said, most users won’t have any issues when using Hide My Ass for normal internet privacy. The OpenVPN protocol uses Blowfish 128, AES-256, and RSA-2048. This is perfectly strong enough, and unlikely to ever be cracked.

Servers

One of the major selling points of Hide My Ass is their huge network of over 830 VPN servers in 280 locations through 190 countries around the globe.

This includes thousands of available IPs:

  • 1008 in Europe

  • 1038 in North America

  • 120 in South America

  • 549 in Asia

  • 382 in Africa

  • 93 in Middle East

This is more than enough locations/ IPs for almost everyone.
